Chess House {Review}

Chess has always been one of those games that I have always wanted to learn how to play but I never thought I would be able to become very skilled at it.  Chess House has changed all of that.  I was able to use the Starter Chess Learning Kit and I’m pleased to say that the world of chess has now been opened to me and my family!

The Starter Chess Learning Kit contains the Elliot’s Chess School Pawn Level DVD, a roll up vinyl chess board with pieces, and a canvas case to put it all in.

The Elliiot’s Chess School Pawn Level DVD has ten lessons covering the following topics:

  • Intro to Chess (board, names of pieces, values)
  • Pawns
  • Rooks
  • Bishops
  • The Queen
  • The King
  • Knight
  • Castling
  • Pawn shields and when to break it
  • Development

In each lesson, Elliot explains the rules of the piece in question, how they move, how they can attack, how many points they are worth, and the best strategy to use with that particular piece.  He shows how the pieces can interact with each other and teaches us why they are important to the game.  The DVD also comes with a booklet containing different games you can play with certain pieces so you can feel comfortable no matter which players are on the board.

The components of the rest of the kit are nice and sturdy and seem to be perfect for younger children to learn how to play.  The vinyl chess board rolls right up and fits in the case, which also has padded zipper pockets for holding the chess pieces and DVD.

The Starter Chess Learning Kit was a BIG hit!  I really appreciated the DVD format of the lessons.  Some things you just need to SEE in order to learn.  As a novice to the game of chess, I found the lessons very easy to understand.  Even so, I was surprised that even Spencer seemed to easily grasp the concepts in each lesson.  In the first lesson we learned how to set up the chess board, how to refer to the various squares, and how to use the pawns.  As soon as the first two lessons were over (they insisted on watching two) each child practiced setting up the board and playing various games using just the pawns.  Game after game after game.  I was especially surprised to see that Spencer (age 6) won just as often as his sisters did.  Each time they would watch a new lesson they would put their new knowledge to the test.

Chess is now the go-to game in our house.  Spencer can often be seen wandering around in with the bag on his shoulders asking one of his sisters to play with him.  We will definitely be putting more of Elliot’s Chess School DVD’s on our Christmas list.  I am amazed at how much they learned in just the first level.  You can purchase the Starter Chess Learning Kit from Chess House for $39.95 and would make a great Christmas gift :)
