If You Were Me and Lived In… {Review}

As a homeschooler I often feel like I’m not doing enough.  Believe it or not, every once in a while I have a nagging voice in my head saying, “you’re not good enough”.  You know the one I mean, the one that whispers whenever you see a brand new curriculum that is just beautiful.  Whenever this happens I can’t help but think how how it would completely revolutionize our homeschool day… and it usually would (if by revolution I mean turn everything upside down and inside out).  Geography is one of those subjects that always gets pushed to the back burner because we just love other things so much more.  Besides, we can incorporate it in with other subjects, right?

Like so many other things, the trouble comes when I try and complicate it.  Carole P. Roman from Away We Go Media very kindly reminded me that simplicity, not complexity is one of the keys to enjoying our educational experience.

The If You Were Me and Lived In… series is a wonderful way to introduce your children to other countries and cultures.  There are four books in the series so far: If You Were Me and Lived in.. Mexico, If You Were Me and Lived in… South Korea, If You Were Me and Lived In… Norway, and If You Were Me and Lived In… France.

The picture books follow a very simple premise: “If you were me and lived in ____ you might …”  Using this format you’re child will catch a glimpse into the lives of children from these countries.  They will learn about customs, landmarks, cities, and vocabulary.  In the back there is even a pronunciation guide for the foreign words found in the book.  I found the books colorful and charming.  My kids (ages 3 to 10) really enjoyed them as well.  We were easily able to read them as we were warming up for our school day.  We especially liked Norway and France.  Since Lucy and I are learning french, it was really fun to learn a little bit about France (and we giggled together as we tried to pronounce the words correctly :))

These books are a great example of how a simple story can draw you in.  The If You Were Me and Lived In… series personalizes the story.  The kids relate to children from other countries that are just like them.  They have favorite foods, favorite toys, and they love their moms and dads just like they do.

You don’t have to have countless worksheets, paper mache activities (as much as the kids love them), or even complex map work to have a great geography lesson!  The If You Were Me and Lived In… series did a great job and I love that I don’t have to feel guilty about skipping geography anymore :)  France, South Korea, and Mexico are all $8.99 and Norway is $10.79.
